In this post, I aim to provide a brief summary of "Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas" and share my thoughts and review of the book.
If you have read this book, I would appreciate hearing your thoughts. Additionally, if you have any recommendations for books to read following this one, or suggestions from other genres, please feel free to share them below.
My preferred genres for reading are:
Fantasy
Romantasy
YA
Fiction
Mystery/Thriller
I'm open to any other ideas. If it's a story with plot twists and excitement or something that really pulls at the heartstrings and makes you feel all the emotions, I'm down to give it a try.
FIRSTLY
I was super eager to dive into the ACOTAR and Crescent City series, and a friend of mine suggested kicking things off with Throne of Glass. Then, I should check out the ACOTAR series before finally tackling The Crescent City Trilogy.
I've already read A Court of Thorns and Roses and honestly, I really liked it. Is it the best book I've ever read? Not really, but I did enjoy it a lot.
The thing is, I'm so obsessed with the Empyrean Series by Rebecca Yarros that I can't help but compare everything else to it. And don't even get me started on all the theories about what's going to happen next and the long wait until we can find out what happens after Onyx Storm!
THRONE OF GLASS SUMMARY
Sometimes I find it tricky to describe a book without spoiling it, so I'm just going to drop the Goodreads synopsis below:
In a land without magic, where the king rules with an iron hand, an assassin is summoned to the castle. She comes not to kill the king, but to win her freedom. If she defeats twenty-three killers, thieves, and warriors in a competition, she is released from prison to serve as the king's champion. Her name is Celaena Sardothien.
The Crown Prince will provoke her. The Captain of the Guard will protect her. But something evil dwells in the castle of glass—and it's there to kill. When her competitors start dying one by one, Celaena's fight for freedom becomes a fight for survival, and a desperate quest to root out the evil before it destroys her world.
PERSONAL REVIEW
I managed to read this book in just three days, and I would say I consumed it in pretty good chunks throughout that time. This is quite an achievement for me, as I often find myself either struggling to get into a book or grappling with the narrative style, which can lead to a prolonged reading experience. When a story doesn’t capture my attention right away or if the writing style feels cumbersome, it can take me quite a while to make significant progress through the pages.
However, this particular book had me thoroughly hooked from the moment I began to immerse myself in its world. The initial chapters presented a slight slow burn, which is common in many novels, as they often take the time to establish characters, settings, and the underlying themes that will unfold later. Despite this slower pace at the beginning, I found myself intrigued and eager to continue reading. The author skillfully crafted the narrative in such a way that, once I pushed through those initial pages, I was completely captivated by the unfolding story.
As I delved deeper into the plot, the pacing picked up significantly, and I became increasingly invested in the characters and their journeys. Each chapter seemed to end with a subtle cliffhanger or an intriguing revelation that compelled me to read just one more chapter, and then another. I found myself carving out time in my day to dive back into the book, often losing track of time as I became absorbed in the narrative.
The way the author developed the characters and the intricacies of their relationships added layers of depth to the story, making it not just a simple tale but a complex exploration of human emotions and motivations. The dialogue felt authentic, and the descriptions were vivid, allowing me to visualize the scenes as if I were right there alongside the characters.
Overall, my experience with this book was refreshing and exhilarating, reminding me of the joy of reading when a story resonates deeply and captures the imagination. It was a rewarding journey that left me wanting more, and I appreciated the skillful storytelling that transformed what could have been a tedious read into a compelling adventure that I could not put down.
You meet most of the main characters right at the beginning, before things really start to get interesting. I love the idea of a 16-year-old competing in assassin trials.
I really enjoy the dynamic Celaena has with the characters you're introduced to, and how it develops over time with some tension here and there.
There was even a moment where Sarah almost makes you think one person is responsible for something, but it turns out it’s not who you’d expect.
With all the ups and downs, twists and turns in this book, I highly recommend giving it a read if you haven't already.
I have added my good reads review below also:
I actually cannot believe the ups and downs of this book. I wasn't too sure about it at first because I felt it was a bit of a slow burn; however, the further in the book, the more the plot twists and things start to get interesting. Highly recommend this book.
